Dr. Marianne Maumus received her medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1989. She went on to complete her internship and residency at Ochsner Medical
Foundation in New Orleans. She completed her training in Internal Medicine. Since then, she has practiced internal medicine throughout New Orleans at Tulane, St. Thomas Health Services as a volunteer physician between 1988- 1995, and Mercy/Baptist Medical Center/Tenet Health/ Christian Health Ministries/Internal Medicine Group as a primary care physician and at Ochsner Health as a hospitalist.
Dr. Maumus was awarded the Chancellor's Award at LSUMC-NO for her work with handicapped children. She founded Camp Tiger in 1985 which continues to bring together first year medical students and NOLA area children with chronic illness who are in need. Each summer, for 30 years and counting, this camp is a great gift to the caretakers of these kids and a great teaching experience for the students. She was awarded Dominican Alumnae of the year in 1992 for her volunteer work at St. Thomas Health Services in the lower garden district. At the time, the clinic was in its infancy. It is now a thriving and vital aspect of New Orleans public health network. While there, in 1990, she took a diversity course from The People's Institute to Undo Racism and Beyond. She is married to a physician, whom she met in medical school, and has two adult children who are both interested in the medical field. She has been active in various community endeavors intermittently throughout her career and life including the New Orleans Council on Aging, AMA Women's Association, Institute of Medicine and Spirituality at Ochsner (IMESO), and she is a board member of the Louisiana Master Naturalist Program of Greater New Orleans. Leadership training includes UNO Government Leadership Institute, 1994, Loyola Institute of Environmental Communications, 2018, and various leadership courses at Ochsner Leadership Institute and Ochsner Learning Network. She was instrumental to bringing opioid stewardship to Ochsner in 2015 and is currently Chair of the Opioid Stewardship hospital work group. She wrote and taped the Ochsner Opioid Stewardship CME program, on Ochsner's CME website, which has received nearly 3000 views so far. She won the 2018 City Business Health Care Hero Award for her work in opioid stewardship. The Opioid Stewardship Team won the 2017 Ochsner Project of the Year. She has several teaching awards from Tulane, Ochsner Clinical School/University of Queensland. She is a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine.
Dr. Maumus has an extensive volunteer history including the Katrina Krewe, 2005-2006. She supports the St. Dominic Parish Haite Mission Committee, St. Mary's Dominican High School in various ways, including volunteering as a parade chaperone for 4 years, and many environmental efforts. She has planted greater than 750 trees in surrounding marshes with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana and the Lake Ponchartrain Basin Foundation. She assisted the Sierra Club and Gulf Restoration Network on their Beyond Coal campaign in 2014 including speaking out at events held by the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources and the Gretna City Council. She is a member of numerous environmental organizations including: Sierra Club, National and Delta chapters, 1991—present, Healthy Gulf, National Wildlife Federation, Louisiana Wildlife Federation, National Geographic Society, The Nature Conservancy, National and Louisiana chapters, and the Lake Ponchartrain Basin Foundation. She also participated in Baton Rouge Behavioral Health Collaborative, Jefferson Parish Health Services Department, Orleans Parish Opioid Task Force, 2018, during the opioid epidemic.
Dr. Maumus is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with a Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine and has been on staff at Ochsner since 2002. Dr. Maumus has an interest in complex medical illness, evidence-based pain management, opioid stewardship, geriatrics, palliative care, provider wellness, spirituality, and building community resilience by incorporating wellness structure, transparency, truth, servant leadership into both private and public regenerative systems. Dr. Maumus is a Louisiana Master Naturalist (Greater New Orleans chapter) and enjoys biking, kayaking, sailing, nature walks, reading and writing in her free time.
