Overview

  • Dr. Benjamin B. Peeler received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. At Vanderbilt, he completed a seven-year general surgery residency where he was given the Harwell Wilson Award, given to the outstanding surgery resident in his class. He then completed three fellowships – in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, as well as vascular surgery at the University of Virginia and in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, at Emory University. Throughout his career, Dr. Peeler has excelled at congenital cardiac care delivery and program building, holding various leadership positions, providing his services through volunteer work, teaching while holding a faculty position, and conducting several research activities. Dr. Peeler previously served as the chair of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute, as well as director of the Sanger/Levine Children's Hospital congenital heart program, and chief of pediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery at Sanger/Levine Children's Hospital, part of the Carolinas HealthCare System. Prior to leading the Charlotte program, he was an associate professor of surgery and the surgical director of the pediatric cardiac surgery program at the University of Virginia. As a member of the pediatric cardiovascular surgery team at Ochsner Hospital for Children, the department was recognized as the clinical department of the year at the 2018 Ochsner Spirit of Leadership Awards. Dr. Peeler is an active member of several organizations including the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgery, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplant, and others.
