Dr. Raymon K. Nelson graduated from Morehouse College in 1979 with a Bachelors of Science degree in biology and a minor in psychology. He graduated with highest honors and can be found in the "Who's Who of the Graduates of American Colleges and Universities" of 1979.
Dr. Nelson graduated from Howard University of College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. in 1983.
He completed a categorical internal medicine internship at D.C. General Hospital from 1983-1984. He then completed a cardiology fellowship at D.C. General Hospital from 1986 to 1988. In 1988 Dr. Nelson entered into a cardiology and internal medicine private practice in Washington, DC, and Maryland until April 2019.
Dr. Nelson has expertise in coronary artery disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, arrhythmias, pulmonary hypertension, echocardiography, cardiovascular stress testing, nuclear cardiology, diagnostic cardiac catheterization, and preoperative and postoperative cardiovascular risk assessment. He has treated thousands of patients in his career as a cardiologist and has always been well respected by his colleagues and his patients. He served as Chairman of Internal Medicine at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. from 2006 to 2011. He also was the medical director of a private cardiac cath lab in Maryland from 2010 to 2018.
Dr. Nelson believes that the practice of medicine is an "art" that only the "gifted" do well. He considers patients as individuals that have sought out his service and considers it an honor to care for them. He always cares for all of his patients in a respectful and kind manner. As he often shares with his patients, Dr. Nelson's professional motto is "I fix broken hearts". He started at Ochsner Health in July 2019 and practices in the cardiology division at St. Bernard Parish Hospital.
