Overview

  • Dr. Rizwan Shaikh completed his undergraduate education at Rutgers University in New Jersey where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in food science in 2009. He went on to study medicine at the American University of Antigua, where he graduated cum laude with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 2013. Dr. Shaikh performed his internship and internal medicine residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia, and transitioned to an ophthalmology residency at the renowned Cullen Eye Institute at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He is currently the vitreoretinal surgery fellow under Drs. Anthony Mazzulla and Joseph Benevento in the retina section of the department of ophthalmology at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana (2019-2021). Dr. Shaikh's clinical responsibilities include staffing the LSU ophthalmology residents at OMC and Leonard Chabert Medical Center (LCMC) in Houma, Louisiana. He is a fellow member of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) and the American Academy of Ophthalmologists (AAO). His clinical interests include diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal vascular diseases. His surgical interests include secondary intraocular lens placement, retinal detachment, and macular hole/pucker repair. He has presented basic science research at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and has co-authored several publications in peer-reviewed journals.
